The City of Lefkada

History of the city of Lefkada.

Lefkada city alley

Today's Lefkada dates to 1684. Lefkada architecture and the way they build their houses had a lot to do with the siesmic activity in those years.

Their building style was unique to Europe and even to Greece. The top floor was build with light materials like mud and wood and the ground floor was made of stone so they could withstand earthquakes.

If you stroll through the alleys of the town you can still see lots of houses with the top floor made of wood with a metal covering.
