What are your winters like? I think this is the most asked question of the tourists. Of course they wonder when it never rains in the summer, how can this island be so green.
Lefkada is so green because it has plenty of rain in the winter. Sometimes starting in October and going on for weeks and weeks. There can be terrible thunderstorms that sound even worse because of the mountains.
All the Greek islands experience much milder winters than the mainland where the mountains are covered with snow until the beginning of April. But the high humidity and strong winds can make the winter seem much colder than in the mountain areas.
In the heart of the winter from 15 December till 15 January the weather can be so nice they remind us of summer. These are called Alkyonidis days. The myth of Alkyonidis says that God offered these days to the Alkioni (Kingfisher) to lay her eggs on the rocks of the Alkyonidis islands in the winter instead of the summer.
Springtime in Greece is my favorite time of the year. All the wild flowers are in bloom and the temperature is comfortably warm.
You can sit out on a terrace enjoying the sunshine without it being too hot.
Be careful because there is usually a lovely but deceiving breeze and you can easily get sunburned.
Although it can be nice and warm during the day, take a sweater or a cardigan because it can still be very chilly in the evenings.
In the summer months rainfall is very rare, especially in August when temperatures can rise up till 38 C. When there is the occasional heat wave it may run up to 42 C to 45 C. This can be very uncomfortable for older people and people with conditions like asthma or heart problems. Those people are advised to stay in air conditioned places and drink plenty of fluid.
If you book a hotel in the high season make sure there is air-conditioning in the room. The temperature at night can still be about 30 C making it sometimes difficult to sleep.
In August try to avoid the hot hours between twelve and four. Have lunch in a shady place and have a siesta just like the Greeks do.
Common are the strong north winds known as Meltemi that usually pick up in the afternoon and last about three days. This strong wind can all of a sudden sweep across Greek waters making it very dangerous for boatman and swimmers. These winds are also feared as they can drive fires very quickly over a long distance.
September can still be very hot in Lefkada but usually the month with the first rain after a long hot summer. Unlike spring most of the flowers have dried and the days are getting shorter.

The sea is still beautiful and warm and the winds are perfect for the ones that love windsurfing and sailing.
The weather can be very nice until the end of October making it still a nice month to come away on holiday.
