Travel to Athens Greece

How to get to Lefkada?

For people living in the States or Australia there are no direct flights to Preveza and they will have to travel to Athens Greece.

Carefully planning your journey ahead saves you long waiting hours for connecting flights and wasting money on a taxi to catch an intercity bus at the last minute.

Athens is a big city and a drive from the airport to the main bus station can take twice as long when you get stuck in one of the usual traffic jams.

From Athens there are four ways to get to Lefkada.

1.By bus.

First of all you have to get from the airport to Athens Bus Station “Kifisos”. You can take a taxi which will cost you roughly 40 to 50 Euro. A second option is the metro or Athens subway. A ticket costs about 3 Euro and allows you to travel with the metro for 90 minutes anywhere you like.

The third and cheapest way to get to the main bus station of Athens is to take the airport bus (nr X93) that leaves every 40 minutes from the airport. Tickets for the bus can be obtained at a small kiosk near the airport bus stop.

As you enter the bus your ticket has to be stamped in a machine. Just do what the people in front of you do. And then it takes about an hour to get to Kifisos bus station. I would not recommend taking the airport bus if you have lots of luggage because the bus can be packed in the summer and there is no special place to store the luggage like on the intercity busses.

There are four busses daily from Athens to Lefkada leaving at :07.00 – 13.00 – 16.30 – 20.30 hours. The price for a bus ticket to Lefkada is 33.80 Euro.

To secure your ticket I would ring in advance and make a reservation. There telephone number is 210 5150108. Make sure you are there 15 minutes before the bus leaves otherwise they will give your ticket away.

2.By Plane.

When you travel to Athens Greece by plane you can find connecting domestic flights from Athens to Lefkada every day during the summer and three times a week in the winter. A domestic flight with Olympic Air or Aegean Air is only 40 minutes flying to Preveza airport and Lefkada.

For more information on domestic flights you can ring Athens airport Elefterios Venizelos

tel: 0030 210 35 30 000 or Preveza airport tel: 0030 26820 28343/ 22505

3.By Taxi.

You can make arrangements for a taxi to pick you up from the airport and it will take you straight to Lefkada. The cost of this trip is roughly 300 Euro but the advantage is that you can stop anywhere for a coffee or to stretch your legs during this 5 hour drive. The intercity bus only stops half way after the bridge at Patras.

4.By Rental Car.

If you travel to Athens Greece you can rent a car at the airport or book one on the internet before you go on holiday and you can drive to Lefkada by yourself. This is not difficult because there is one big road and if you follow the signs you can’t go wrong.

I would recommend this if you are a family or a group of friends because if you add up the price for the tickets of the bus or plane this may be nearly the same. Plus this way you will also have a car at your disposal during your holidays in Lefkada.
